Posted - 06 Aug 2012 : 17:41:25 Hi all,
My first time posting here. I did a search and nothing came up about what I'm going to talk about. Most posts are years old, so it seems this site doesn't get much traffic. I've read that a movie was being looked in to years back, but the only project that arose was a cartoon version of Dragons of Autumn Twilight (Which flopped, but I'm sure most here still liked it, like me. It just didn't do the books justice.) We all wanted more.
With the Lord of the Rings three movie series making a huge hit on the big screen, we all thought it would pump life into more adventure fantasy movies. In some ways it has.
I think we can all agree how successful Game of Thrones has been. This HBO series is another fantastic character driven story which the follows the books extremely well. Even the special effects have done the series justice. The HBO Original Series format gives each episode time to develope the characters and story line as the books. This is what the author's want and this is what we want. Am I right? I think so!
From what I've read, it seems money is the problem for making a big screen version of Dragonlance...no one wants to take a chance on it in Hollywood it seems, but we all know how Dragonlance would top Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones. Or at least that's how I feel. I wonder if Tracy or Margaret has approached HBO or Showtime (Just not the SciFi channel!) about making their novels into Original series projects. One season would be equivalent to a 10-15hr movie. Once it catches on, then producers would come out of the woodwork to finance a major motion picture since Lord of the Rings and Game of Thrones have obviously made money.
How do you feel about Dragonlance as an HBO Original Series? Sure would beat another cartoon and it would allow Tracy and Margaret to tell their story the way it needs to be told. Your thoughts?

Posted - 27 Aug 2012 : 00:21:49 What would be the point of doing both? If one already exists and its good why re do it? Its a sure thing that there will never be a remake of LOTR so if DL were done in CG first what would be the point of a live action?

Posted - 26 Aug 2012 : 17:31:08 I loved both series, but LOTR needed the Appendix to flesh out so much of the references in the book. If you have read the books and not the appendix you need to go back and read the appendix
THe CG in Beowulf was done amazingly well, the same as Polar Express Robert Zemekis is a great director and I would think they could do a great job on Dragonlance.
Now I would PREFER a live action movie no doubt. But maybe they would go the CG route for a trilogy before going live action? |

Posted - 25 Aug 2012 : 06:03:05 Erelivent? Cuz there are pages and pages in those books dedicated just to describeing things and places and there are instenses when ur like wait time out what the heck was supposed to be happening before I learned what this entire forest looks like and who lives in it? That could get pretty confuseing. And what I mean is that Beowulf and 300 were filmed in live action but then edited with CG effects put over top the end result makes everything look like a comic book in a way.

Posted - 24 Aug 2012 : 23:46:50 I couldnt agree more. Tolkein may have been a great author but his style realy made my head hurt The writeing style in Dragonlance is what I like and it is the style I have tried to emulate.
I dont know about that, if you are talking about the Beowulf movie that I know I`m not really into that CG over live action thing. I would like to see just classic straight forward live action. LOTR was great without all that CG overlay rubish.

Posted - 24 Aug 2012 : 17:19:53 Tolkein's books were out for YEARS before anything was made. They had a cartoon made first as well. I am not sure if you can call it a flop or not but it was not a huge market success.
Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit are great books, hard reads though. JRRT did an AMAZING job of describing middle earth but a befuddling job at times on the characters. Gimli son of Gloin was pretty much all you knew of him. Aragorn was called fifty different names and at times the reader has to stop and think ok is he King Elandril, Dundean, Strider, Aragorn, Heir of Islidur...and on and on.
Dragonlance is a much easier read, keeps you more engaged page after page. You get through the book WAY FASTER. Lord of the Rings was awesome but you had to read the Appendix to get the back stories that were so often referenced during the book that made it hard to understand at times.
I still think Dragonlance done like the animated Beowulf would be AMAZING!!!! |

Posted - 13 Aug 2012 : 01:28:43 One of my life goals is to see a DL movie made. If someone else doesn't make it, I just might have to someday. I would at least put a lot of money into helping it get created if that's the problem...but that would be later when I've actually made a life for myself. Somebody has to see the potential for these movies! I mean, really? I would probably die if I heard that they were making them. And on the LOTR thing...I am a HUGE LOTR fan and I always will be. I absolutely adore the stories and the movies. I'm also a HUGE DL fan and absolutely adore those stories. I think that they are both equal to me, but in different ways. They are two completely different things and the great thing is that I can love and obsess over each of them for the different things they offer. So, yeah...Anyway, I wonder who someone would have to talk to to get a movie made for DL. I wonder if they've thought about it.
"Raistlin!" It was Crysania's voice. Lifting his gaze, he saw her standing before him, holding his hands away from his face, her eyes wide and filled with concern. "I'm all right", Raistlin said coldly. "Leave me alone!" But, even as he spoke, he sighed and lowered his head again, shuddering as the horror of the dream washed over him. Pulling a clean cloth from a pocket, he began to dab at the wounds on his face. "No, you're not", Crysania murmured, taking the cloth from his shaking hands and gently touching the bleeding gouges. "Please, let me do this", she said, as he snarled something unintelligible. "I know you wont let me heal you, but there is a clear stream near. Come, drink some water, rest and let me wash these". Sharp, bitter words were on Raistlin's lips. He raised a hand to thrust her away. But then he realized he didn't want her to leave. The darkness of the dream receded when she was with him. The touch of warm, human flesh was comforting after the cold fingers of death. And so, he nodded with a weary sigh.

Posted - 12 Aug 2012 : 02:08:38 I have the feeling that the only way a DL movie will be made is if a fan makes the pitch. Someone as passionate as those we have here I think could get it done. I`d do it my self but I dont have any experiance in the field of movie makeing.

...in a kind of an answer to your question Hammer, it would obviously be someone who has a HEART for it as well as a PASSION. Someone who has read the series for themselves and loves it like we do......
....and as of late, I do not think there is anyone who is a Director or Producer that does except the authors and us....
