*Lance colored a little but Thomas patted him on the shoulder* "You`re still growing, you will be plenty strong soon enough. But for safety`s sake I think I will see if you can draw the string back with it unloaded" *while saying this Thomas got his crossbow into position* "Now with the front end facing down you`re going to brace the butt of the weapon against your stomach like this. Then take the string in both hands and pull back till it locks into place. Understand?" *Lance nodded* "Alright then, here" *Thomas handed the crossbow to Lance who copied the instructions exactly. He took hold of the string with both hands*
"Like this?"
"Yes thats right, now pull back" *Lance pulled with all his strength and managed to get the string in the right position. He smiled proudly and Thomas smiled back* "Good job"

"Well now that I know you can draw it I will show you how to shoot with it. This way" *Thomas put his hand on Lances shoulder again and led him to the range. He placed an arrow in the crossbow and let Lance draw the string again* "Now you want to hold it like this" *he moved Lances arms into place* "Hold with one hand here and the other on the trigger. Now look down the arrow shaft, right at the target. When you think you have a good shot you are going to want to take a breath and hold it, otherwise your exhaling will cause the shot to go off. Understand?"
"Yes I think so"
"When you are ready then take the shot" *Thomas stepped back*

*Lance aimed slowly, the crossbow was heavy. He took a slow breath in and held it before pressing the trigger. The arrow loosed and hit the target one ring from the center* "Very good shot Lance!"

"That was fun and exciting. Could I try another shot?"
"Be my guest" *Thomas handed Lance another arrow, which the boy fit to the string and pulled back into place. He held the crossbow the way Thomas had shown him and aimed again. The second shot hit near the first, a little outside the same ring* "Another nice shot"
