Someone had a similar topic on the film boards, but I really think it belongs here. Besides, last time I looked the original thread was buried pretty deep.
I always thought that Fritz Leiber's Fafhrd and the Gray Mouser could make for a terric film series. The stories are witty and sophisticated, but would have to be handled carefully to survive a Hollywood treatment.
When I first started reading the Thieves' World books, I thought that they could be turned into a t.v. series or miniseries. At the time, I thought that Rutger Hauer would be perfect for Tempest. Don't know who I would cast now.
Robert E. Howard's Solomon Kane could be turned into a great historical sword & sorcery flick. I'd like to see it kept fairly dark and gritty, though--unlike the King Kull movie.
Would anyone else like to see David & Leigh Eddings' Elenium (the first Sparhawk series) adapted into a film or limited television series? I need a break from child heroes. Let's have a seasoned, older protagonist get a star turn. I suggest Viggo Mortensen for Sparhawk.
Finally (for now), I would really like to see an Elric movie, adapted from Michael Moorcock's Eternal Champion books. Maybe directed by Terry Gilliam.

In my lifetime I'd like to see A Song of Ice and Fire by George RR Martin (HBO has the rights, but who knows what will become of it), The Dark Tower by Stephen King (yes, it is a sci-fi/fantasy novel, don't let the "King" of horror novels mislead you), and a more fan-friendly version of the Lord of the Rings.

HA ahahaha! VD, i can't believe you said LOTR. thats hilarious!
Besides the obvious Dragon Lance live action, I would really like to see more of the old James Bond books be redone, and kept closer to the books like Casino Royal was, but even more so. Or at least make them a continuous story line where you see Bond become less and less human as the life of a secret agent takes its toll on his mind and body.
If we're talking straight dragons and wizard stuff... I dunno. I'd like to see a film based on the dragon mountain D&D adventure. It is the hardest dungeon I have ever come across in my entire life, and the main enemy you fight are kobolds! (They are like half a goblin...) The adventure is filled with traps, betrayals, and of course at the end, a giant red dragon! Actually, I just got my books back.. I might start a new campaign...
And who can forget the Hobbit? That would make a fantastic movie for kids!

It's gonna be a real long time, but someone has to have the balls enough to make it better!

I didn't add this because they are making it. It's just a question of who's directing. But I agree, I'd love to see it. Let's go Raimi!

I want to see the Temeraire books made into movies (though I hear Peter Jackson might be directing ) and I most definitely, definitely want to see The Book of Lost Things by John Connolly to be made into a movie. Getting my cast ready all up in my head, lol.
I'd like to see the Courtney Crumrin books made into movies, too.

Ice and Fire, Temeraire series might make an interesting movie like MSTO said.
I wish I knew what they were doing with that Ice and Fire TV show.

I have written to HBO a handful of times inquiring about it. I have not heard a reponse back. Maybe they're pissed at me because I ripped them a new one for cancelling Deadwood.

Song in the Silence is from the Tales of Kolmar series...I didn't know the series title until I looked up the author's website just now. Excellent, excellent book, the sequels would be good too. They really capture the magic and awe of dragons, I think. (Varien...*drool*)
Speaking of dragons, Dealing with Dragons would be a really fun movie if they made it right!

Hurrrmmmm..... Its sci-fi...The City Who Fought by Anne McCaffery. I LOVE that book, its fantastic. A live action The last unicorn. I heard that they were making it...but I lost the link. And of course, you could make 3 movies out of Raymond E Feist's brilliant, Magician.
Like fantasy, powerful mages, dragons, that kind of thing? http://www.freewebs.com/thelightestdark |

I would actually like a two year break from fantasy films. They are all starting to look and feel so alike that I think studios need to not overkill the genre like they started doing with Marvel Comics movies... let them figure out new locations and ways of filming, and then I would love to see Dragonsong and Dragonsinger made... but not right now.

my brother was talking about how it would be awesome if they had adapted the forgotten realms books into t.v./movies, but then he thought about it for a second and recanted saying 'it would just cause more Drizzt clones in most fantasy games' |

I'd like to see any of David Gemmell's books in movie format. Druss the Legend rocks.
Also, Dennis L. Mckiernan has a book called the Cavern of Socrates. A handful of gamers test out a virtual reality program for a fantasy style video game, like a MMORPG. The program locks them in, and then tries for a TPK. |

Thought this was interesting. These books were some of my dad's favorites from way back. I read them years ago when I was in College back in the mid 90's. Looks like Universal is looking into possibly doing a movie on the Lensman books. I found a news story in Sci-Fi.com. Looks like they are working on an 18-month renewable option for the rights. The books are by E.E. "Doc" Smith and were written back in the 30's. Very cool space opera type books. I really enjoyed them but haven't read them in years now.
I must have forgotten my Productivity enhancers. |
