Quick question:
Has anyone read both Vinas Solamnus & Rise of Solamnia series? If so, which one should be read first. It seems almost a toss-up.
For those who have read the Rise of Solamnia series, is Niles as bad an author as the reviewers claim?

I've read both (or at east the two that Rise series to date) and I would say to read Vinas Solamnus First. Its just the one book and gives some great history. But like the Soulforge it also takes a little bit away from the legend of Vinas by actually telling the real story. Plus it will fill in the time before the third book in the Rise of Solamnia series is out, then you can read all three of them in a row uninterupted! |

Vinas is probably the best DL book after Chronicles and Legends. It's hard for me to say if I like The Legend of Huma or Vinas better, they're almost even.
I'd read Vinas first. And it takes nothing away from the legend. It is very realistic in it's story telling and that's one of the things that makes it so great.

You've lost me.
So read Vinas, then Series 1-3? or Series vol.1,vol.2, Vinas, vol.3?

Rut roh! I had to e-mail the seller to ask what is going on, lol

are you shitting me? Is it gold platted? Damn, maybe I should start selling my books... How much do you think the entire collection would go for?
read Vinas first. The the series 3-1-2, just for fun. See how it end, the begins, and then you get to the cream filling! |

I said it was a great story but it's definitely not worth $56.31 for a used paperback. It's a shame I lost mine when I moved or I would have gladly offered you mine for $50 even.

I dunno, $56.31 sounds like the guy did his research on the value. Its too weird of a number for a thought process and days of calculations of means and averages and a few charts, for it to not be worth exactly that much. |

Man! Thanks for the generous offer Vass!
Does Vinas occur before the Series takes place? Is it the "Rise of Solamnia" (after Vinas)? Or, does the "Rise" series encompass all?
Basically, James, since he sucks at answering his PMs;) lol. j/k J-dawg!

I meant it as one would have to be insane to pay that much for it, not that the amount priced was wrong.

Sorry I should have quoted. I meant my last remark to be in response to James' last post. You and I were posting at the same time and yours got in first.
Anyway, in response to your question, the Rise of Solamnia series happens after the War of the Souls, and it should be more aptly titled "the Return of the Knights of Solamnia." Vinas Solamnus details the birth of the Solamnic Knighthood and the Code and Measure and it's probably one of, if not the oldest, DL novel in terms of timeline.

when i was planning on buying vinas solamnus I looked on line and found it for some outrageously insane price too. I waited a few days and eventually snagged one up for only 20 bucks :) So, it can be found for cheaper. Just thought I would throw that little bit of hope out there

Cheers! I hope you get a copy. Like I said, it's one of the best DL novels out there.

I found a used copy for $1.75 from a bargain store. The past reviewers commented that the qualited was better than advertised, so this gives me hope. Either way, I only spent less than an two bucks. The cheapest NEW copy was 18.00.
I also have acquired vol.1 Rise of Solamnia and vol.1 Minotaur Wars. I am currently reading the Night of Blood.
