The Seafort Saga By: David Feintuch
Midshipman's Hope is the first book in the Seafort Saga by David Feintuch. It revolves around the life of Nicholas Seafort, a Midshipman on a spacecraft, and how his life is drastically changed by a tragedy.
I know this is more science fiction than fantasy, but the two go hand in hand.
This series is great in that life for Nicholas gets very complicated and the decisions he has to make end up being very difficult. Everything he loves in life is eventually taken from him and all that remains is duty. He takes this to such an extreme that the reader begins to question the sanity of Nicholas.
Basically this series is good for anyone who would like to see how one might deal with the fact that everything that could possibly go wrong, does go wrong. Usually with lasting impact.
There are seven books in the series:
Midshipman's Hope Challenger's Hope Prisoner's Hope Fisherman's Hope Voices of Hope Patriarch's Hope Children of Hope
An eighth book was completed and ready for publication just before the author's death in late 2006. It's status is unknown.
Interesting Note:
I used to work in a bookstore, and one day a man walked into the store and asked to borrow a pen. I gave him one and he immediately walked over to some books and began writing in them. Alarmed, I asked him what he was doing. He looked a little shocked, then smiled and said "Don't worry, I wrote these books. Just giving anyone who buys them a nice little surprise." It was David Feintuch, and he was autographing his books. That was the day I decided to read Midshipman's Hope, and I'm glad I did. I picked up a signed copy of each of his books as well. |

This sounds good Slorg. I may have to get involved in these. Once Jan. 15th is past that is. I think I will need them by that time. And what a great stroke of luck for you on the autographed books!!! ...Being an ex-sailer-man myself I think these will be cool.

Ooh you'll really like them then.
Much like how Tom Clancy's experience makes his books more realistic, David Feintuch also served in the Navy which adds more realism to how the various characters interact with those of higher or lower rank, and the general things that need to be taken care of on the ship. |

Yeah it's in order.
Be warned: Voices of Hope was a bit boring, but the other books were pretty good.
Hope you like them. |

Thanks Slorg! I will check them out and will let you know how I liked them. I'm still going to wait however until my copy of the DL DVD shows up in my mail box and see it, before I start to read them though.

...well I would have got them last month for Christmas, Unfortunately my Dalmation "Chelsea" fell ill with ear problems and I had to take her to the Vet. about minus $600+ (US) later, I was able to take her home. That put a crimp in my plans for the books.

This month however is diff. I'll get them for my B-day.....

I got the first three books Slorg!!!! ...I'll let you know in about a week.....!

LOL!!! ...I may however come in and ask about a Character or two and try to stay away from 'spoiler' questions. I love Sci-fi & Fantasy, so you need not 'hide' anywhere..........
Okay Slorg, I'm at where he (Nicholas Seafort)reluctantly has command of the UNS Hibernia. Pretty good so far, just wondering if this poor guy's luck can get any worse......

I have a number of book store gift cards, due to some of my relatives, so I think I'll buy the first book and see how I like it.

Cool Sirch.
I think these books are great in that my opinions of the characters change so drastically through the series.
There's a few characters in these that I hated at first, then loved later in the series.

I looked around both my Borders and my Barnes and Noble and I couldn't find the book in stock there. I guess I will have to order it. So much for gift cards.

Both of those stores should be able to special order the books in. I used to work at a Waldenbooks, which was owned by Borders, and we could order them in pretty easily (though I suppose it depends on warehouse stock these days as the books are getting on in age).
Fizban how are the books coming along?
