Dragonlance should be a movie made by the fans. Sounds overwhelming, doesn’t it. How? It should be a net-base collaborative effort of Dragonlance fans pooling there collective talents to produce the film the way it should be.
There are tons of talented fans posting art on sites like Dragonlance.com and even a site for movie story-boards to draw upon. Such a film , which would most likely be animated or CGI, would belong to the fans who helped to created (and Weis & Hickman, of couse).
Such projects are possible, look at Linux. A Computer Operating System which grew from one College Student’s dorm room to having over 50 million users worldwide. A movie, I believe, can be done.
Anybody else interested?

actually, my friends and i were talking about making a movie, but the only problem was $$ and finding people who would work for free(and that were decent)

My idea is that if we have a lot of people willing to pitch in a little a lot can be done. By getting lots of people involved there will be a greater pool of talent to draw from. This would be a vast collaborative effort.
Key elements of Such a Project:
- People willing to volunteer to manage certain aspects of the project. I.e. someone will coordinate story boards or scripts and etc.
- Documentation of work and contributions so that credit can be given if this project ever became a major film.
- If this is to be done in CGI processing of images could be done via distributed processing. Similar to what Universities are doing to find cures for cancer. We would not to have a supercomputer to render images if we can get enough people (Dragonlance Fans) to install a small program on their computers which will utilize the CPU downtime to perform small computations for us. This way you divide the processing task into smaller tasks and send them to many computers. That would be the most technical part of the project.
- An official O.K. from Weis & Hickman, we are dealing with copy-righted material.
This is by no means everything that will be needed for a fan-made film to make it to the big screen but I feel that the more people become interested the closer it will be to becoming a reality.

Eheh.... Kaist's syinical remark is kinda dead on... Besides the funding, (Wich is why Follywood doesn't produce the movie), ya have general location problems, sound, lighting, stages, colabirations. There is no way you can compair this task you've presented to everyone here, to how Linux was made. Linux is a code, made from dozen of idea's. But the CODE, stays the same. Same language, ect. You start something like this, thinking in terms of "Linux making", isn't going to work.... What Idea's once person may have, may be interpratated (Spelling sucks ok... So sue me.) by somone else as a crazy way of protraying Tass or Raist. Whomever.... Point is, language, inturpratation of the story, what the background should look like, why it happened, where it happened.... Is all inturpratation. A colabiration of this magnatude would produce a very, "Heavy Metal" (The movie, not that new FAKK 2 crap) looking film.

yes.*cough* darksunz got my point. ive been on Raistlin fan sites where they have art, and god! half of them arnt *cough* half of what i picture. either he looks too old too young too fat too thisorthat, i say that this task is fairly impossible. again *cough* there is little possibility that *cough* we can do the movie well and to everyones pleasures. and that we even can FILM it, due to the fact thtat we are all across the us.*cough*

Well, good points you've made and problems that I expect to have to deal with. I never said it would be easy of quick. I'd rather see a movie like this made without being reduced to that PG-13 Hollywood B.S. I understand why people wouldn't be willing to try such an endeavor but you don't get things done without trying.

Please elaborate. Are you talking about actors for the screen of voices for a CGI or Animated movie?
For a CGI project I'm looking into various open source rendering software. Art of Illusion looks good, www.artofillusion.org. Still have yet to realy test if out.
